Depending on how quickly your child grows you will need to buy a booster seat or a high back booster seat once they reach around 3 to 4 years old. It should last from 3-12 years depending on the brand and model that you buy. Most States in the US require the use of a booster seat by law until your child reached at least 6 to 8 years old or until they are large/tall enough to be safely secured with the standard seatbelt. It is important that you familiarise yourself with the state laws regarding child safety in your car before making any purchases. There is nothing more important to consider than your child’s safety when you are looking to buy a booster seat or high back booster seat. Most parents will actually choose to use a booster seat up until their child is around 10 years old, a large portion up until 12 years, especially if their child is on the small side.

What is great about Booster Seats?
The great thing about standard booster seats is they are extremely easy to transport. They are very light weight and some even come with a built in carrying option (such as doubling as a backpack or holdall) to make it extra easy to take your booster seat away with you if you are travelling or if you are getting into a friend’s car or taxi cab for example. The other great feature with booster seats is the large majority of them are compatible with pretty much every car, they simple link in with the seat belt and raise up your child into a more comfortable and safe position. The extra height the booster seat gives also means that your child has a much better viewing perspective and thus can see what’s going on outside, keeping them entertained more easily on journeys. This is a big plus for any parent, especially on long journeys.
What to consider when buying a Booster Seat
The main factor that you need to consider when reviewing baby car seats or looking to buy a booster seat for your 3-12 year old is whether you want to buy a high back booster seat or if you would like to buy a standard booster with no back. The high back booster seats provide much better support to your child’s back and neck areas, most also have excellent side impact protection in case there is a collision. The side protection and back protection built into the high back booster seats also help to secure your child more firmly when travelling, helping to make them more comfortable.
The drawback of the high back boosters, and what makes some parents choose the booster seats with no back, is the lack of portability. The backless booster seats are much easier to travel with or change from car to car, especially the ones that double up as backpacks or holdalls. The Safety 1st BoostApak car seat is a fantastic example of this, lightweight and super easy to carry.
So basically you need to decide what is most important to you, is it safety and support or portability and weight? Whatever you feel is most important you should be able to find one to suit you from our favourite brands Graco, Safety 1st or Cybex.
